But What If….

rainbowDoes anyone like to think about loss? NO, DEFINITELY NOT. We don’t just skip that topic, we run from it with all our might. It makes sense… loss is painful, tragic and irreversible usually. We all wish it didn’t exist…but living in a dream world doesn’t accomplish much. Isn’t it better to have real hope for the real difficulties we face daily?

What are you afraid to lose? Who are the people, the things, the honors that would make you rethink how much you want to live life?  There is only one guarantee in life for those who have accepted Christ as Lord and Savior, and that is

God will never leave or forsake us.

No matter what else does happen, you will be ok because you have God.

We almost have a superstitious attitude about the realities of tragedy in human life, don’t we? To even think about experiencing a major loss seems like some sort of weird request to have it happen. We also can avoid those suffering, like we may catch a case of tragedy from them. When we do support and encourage a friend in a difficult place, it’s still difficult to talk about the experience with those we know best though we really do need to. Nothing about dealing with tragedy seems natural, because before the days of sin, it did not exist and was never meant to.

God is a God of love and goodness. He is definitely not out to trick us or infect us when we aren’t looking. I think it is wise to think through how we would face different situations. Not obsess over them, or even dwell on them…but just think them through so we acknowledge we would be ok and stop using so much emotional energy fighting our “what-ifs”. There is much to experience in life but we can’t do that well if 90% of our emotional energy is taken up by fear and worry.

How would I handle it if this happened? It would be terribly difficult, even horrible but God would be there with you and He would help you get through it. There is nothing out there, or in you, that would cause God to abandon you. Yes, those scenarios would be extremely difficult, painful, tragic and unfair….but you have a promise from God:

Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” Deuteronomy 31:6

God will not physically leave us or emotionally forsake us. No matter what we may lose, or have to go through in this very imperfect, sinful world, we have our best friend, lover, comforter, encourager, hope and strength always with us – GOD.

I’ve heard true stories that just mortify me. How did that person get through that, I wonder….abuse, neglect, war, slavery, etc.? I feel sure I would have given up or failed in their position. But in the midst of the darkest days, God is there shining His light, getting us through that day, giving us the strength we need. He helps us take that one step we need to and then rest, so we can take the next step tomorrow. Before we know it, we’ve been able to go a long way, though we didn’t feel we had the energy to even stand up.

So we can say in truth, about any situation we come against,

I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Philippians 4:13
